Installing Landscapes in Las Vegas During Winter

Installing landscapes in Las Vegas during winter can be a good strategy, as the cooler weather reduces plant stress and water demand. Here are some guidelines for winter landscape installation in the Las Vegas area that we follow and recommend to our clients:

Choose Hardy Plants

Opt for plants that are well-suited to the desert environment, such as native species or other drought-tolerant varieties. Many nurseries and landscaping guides in Las Vegas recommend plants like agave, yucca, and desert marigold, as well as trees like mesquite or palo verde.

Watering

Even in winter, newly planted landscapes need regular watering until they establish. Water them lightly after planting, and follow the Southern Nevada Water Authority‘s one-day-per-week winter watering schedule to keep them hydrated without overwatering. You may need to hand-water more sensitive plants initially.

Avoid Frost-Sensitive Plants

Temperatures in Las Vegas can drop below freezing at night, so avoid installing frost-sensitive plants until early spring, when the risk of frost decreases. If you choose more delicate species, be prepared to cover them with frost cloths during cold snaps.

Amend the Soil

Many Las Vegas soils are sandy or clay-heavy, which can affect drainage. Amending the soil with compost or other organic material can improve plant health and promote root growth.

Mulch for Moisture Retention

Adding a layer of mulch around plants helps conserve soil moisture, protects roots, and moderates soil temperatures. Mulch can also prevent weeds, which compete for water and nutrients.

Install Drip Irrigation

If youโ€™re putting in new plants, consider installing a drip irrigation system to ensure efficient watering. Drip systems reduce water waste and allow for more targeted watering of trees, shrubs, and plants, which is ideal in desert landscapes.
